‘Science education forms an important entitlement for all young people’  

 Through science we encourage curiosity in the world around us, encourage the asking of questions, learn to explore and test our ideas, look for patterns and develop communication skills.

At Lamberhurst St Mary’s, we have developed a broad and balanced science curriculum to support pupils in learning the three disciplines of science:

Biology, Chemistry and Physics

This is achieved through ‘Substantive Knowledge (knowledge of the products of science, such as models, laws and theories) and Disciplinary Knowledge (the practices of science, which teaches pupils how scientific knowledge becomes established and gets revised). Through this approach pupils understand that science is both a body of established knowledge and a discipline of enquiry.

Our curriculum is sequenced to enable pupils to build on their knowledge of concepts and develop skills as they go on their learning journey through the school.   Pupils learn through a coherent combination of instructional teaching and practical work which builds on what has come before.

We encourage pupils to be inquisitive and engaged through their science lessons in school and beyond, to become life-long learners with an excitement and fascination for the subject.

We aim to equip pupils with the skills required to understand how scientific knowledge has been developed through enquiry, recognising that it is open to revision as new evidence is discovered.  As pupils learn this, they also make links between the classroom and the real world, recognising the significance of science to society, their own lives and to solving global issues.
