PHONICS AND Early Reading
At Lamberhurst St. Mary’s we strive for all our children to be confident and enthusiastic readers, which is why the teaching of early reading is an absolute priority.
Reading is highly valued as a key life skill and we are passionate about enabling our children to become lifelong readers.
The Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics scheme is designed to get our youngest children off to a flying start so that they can quickly develop the skills to decode words in order to read fluently and with understanding. This also helps to develop a love of books and the motivation to read for pleasure.
EYFS Development Matters and the National Curriculum stress the importance of phonics in learning to read:
‘Skilled word reading involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Underpinning both is the understanding that the letters on the page represent spoken words.
Read Write Inc is an inclusive systematic phonics programme that enables the children to confidently learn the 44 phonemes (sounds) in the English language and the graphemes (letter or letters that represent them). The children use their phonic knowledge to blend sounds to read words and segment to spell. Phonics is taught daily in EYFS and KS1 and each lesson follows the same routines so that the children are familiar with the structure. Our pupils are very engaged in their learning and are proud of their reading progress.
We also read a range of inspiring books to our children every day to further develop their love of the written word and support their Cultural Capital. While adults are reading to the children, they are modelling enthusiasm, fluency and expression and the pupils are learning new vocabulary and developing an understanding of story patterns and characters.
